Lower order roots exert the greatest selective pressure on microbial communities, impacting microbial composition and abundance. This study found that lower order roots of six temperate tree species have a stronger impact on microbial composition and abundance than higher order roots. Absorptive roots showed higher microbial carrying capacity, highlighting the importance of not homogenizing fine roots in microbiome studies.
