The tomato rhizosphere microbiome influences root exudate composition via a systemic root–root signalling mechanism. This study showed that microbial colonization of one root can alter exudate composition in a distant root, naming this process as SIREM (systemically induced root exudation of metabolites). E.g., Bacillus subtilis modulated the systemic exudation of the acyl sugars metabolite with insecticide function. This study provides evidence that microbiome-induced systemic exudation enhances soil conditioning and reveals new insights into microbiota-mediated root metabolism.
