To meet the Paris Agreement’s temperature goal, reducing methane (CH4) emissions is crucial alongside achieving net-zero or net-negative carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In a 1.5°C scenario from 2020 to 2050, CH4 mitigation can lower temperatures by 0.1°C, while CO2 emissions continue to increase temperatures until net-zero is achieved. The GWP* method, which converts emissions into ‘warming-equivalent emissions,’ offers a transparent way to assess and communicate progress towards climate targets. This method improves upon standard CO2-equivalent metrics by better reflecting the different warming impacts of CH4 and CO2.
