Drought alters soil microbial activity and carbon allocation, increasing CO2 and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions to the atmosphere. This study found that while CO2 efflux decreased due to reduced microbial activity, VOC production, including acetate and diacetyl, increased. This shift suggests reduced carbon cycling efficiency and altered carbon fate during drought.
