Soil biodiversity and functions across global biomes exhibit nonlinear patterns strongly influenced by water availability. A study of 383 sites reveals that shifts in precipitation and evapotranspiration significantly impact soil organisms and ecosystem functions, including nutrient cycling and carbon sequestration. Crossing water availability thresholds can critically affect essential ecosystem services.
