Drought manipulation in wheat fields revealed that bacterial community composition varies significantly between plant compartments, not due to precipitation. Osmotic stress-resistant microorganisms were less represented in the rhizosphere than in leaves. Actinobacteria were prevalent among 44 stress-resistant isolates, suggesting the leaf endosphere as a target for identifying drought-resistant bacteria.
