Warming will lead to substantial soil carbon (C) losses, but Earth system models (ESMs) may underestimate this risk. Analysis of over 9,000 soil profiles shows C storage declines strongly with temperature, with a greater reduction in coarse-textured soils compared to fine-textured ones.
