Active and natural restoration both enhance soil carbon sequestration but vary in effectiveness. In a large-scale study across China, active restoration sequestered more carbon in carbon-poor soils and topsoil, while natural regeneration was more effective in carbon-rich soils and subsoil. The choice between methods should consider soil context to optimize carbon sequestration benefits.
