Root phenotypes influence microbial colonization by creating heterogeneous microhabitats at the root-soil interface. This mini-review explores how variations in root anatomy and architecture affect microbial resource availability and spatial distribution. It proposes integrating root phenotypes with microbial microhabitats to enhance the targeted manipulation of plant-associated microbiomes.
