Root hair phenotypes influence nitrogen acquisition in maize

Root hair phenotypes influence nitrogen acquisition in maize

Long, dense root hairs significantly enhance nitrogen (N) acquisition in maize by increasing root surface area and soil exploration, particularly under low-N conditions. Simulation and field studies show that maize genotypes with long root hairs (RHL) improve N acquisition, increasing biomass and N content by up to 267% under low-N conditions. Long RHL also enhanced yield, suggesting root hairs are a valuable target for breeding improved N acquisition in crops.
