Nematode-based indices (NBIs) are crucial for assessing soil health and sustainability. This review evaluates the use and evolution of NBIs, emphasizing the Channel Index and Metabolic Footprints. It provides a framework for applying NBIs in agricultural systems and suggests improvements based on nematode ecology and recent methodological advancements.
