Phosphorus (P) is crucial for understory plant growth under elevated CO2 (eCO2); P limits plant responses to eCO2 and microorganisms have an indirect role. This commentary discusses the challenges of integrating microbial processes into models, and the current understanding of microbes in plant growth under eCO2, and identifies key research areas to advance knowledge in this field.
