Land conversion to agriculture induces taxonomic homogenization of soil microbial communities globally

Agricultural land conversion leads to taxonomic and functional homogenization of soil bacteria. Analyzing 1,185 soil samples and 2,400 global samples, we found 20% of phylotypes decreased and 23% increased in croplands, with enrichment in specific taxa. Functional genes for nitrogen and phosphorus are depleted in croplands, impacting soil microbial diversity and function.
