Warming will cause significant global soil organic carbon (SOC) losses due to increased microbial activity despite uncertainties. The evidence includes increased soil respiration with temperature and SOC accumulation in colder regions. Aggressive emission reduction targets are needed to limit climate change to 1.5°C by 2100.
