Evaluating the near- and long-term role of carbon dioxide removal in meeting global climate objectives

Evaluating the near- and long-term role of carbon dioxide removal in meeting global climate objectives

The 6th Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Report lacked sufficient land-sector scenario data to estimate total carbon dioxide removal deployment. Using land-based CO2 removal data from IPCC scenarios, we show afforestation and reforestation are crucial near-term mitigation strategies, contributing around 10% of net GHG reductions from 2020 to 2030. Novel technologies like direct air carbon capture scale by 2050 to balance residual emissions.
