This study expands the role of Calcium in SOC persistence from solely a driver of physico-chemical reactions to a mediator of coupled abiotic-biotic cycling of SOC. Here, Ca promoted hyphae-forming bacteria increasing litter incorporation into microbial biomass and carbon use efficiency by ~45%, and reduced CO2 production by 4%.
