Methane’s impacts on climate, ecosystems, and air pollution are not fully addressed by current UNFCCC frameworks, which focus on its CO₂-equivalent effects over 100 years. While air quality regulations address ozone, they overlook methane’s role as its precursor. Accelerated global methane mitigation is crucial given its rising concentrations and significant near-term impacts. The article reviews governance challenges and opportunities for improved methane management.
