This study analyzed maize rhizosphere microbiota along the root axis, finding high variability and shifts in microbial community composition. Root tips exhibited random assembly, while more deterministic processes influenced communities further up the root, especially in regions with developed lateral roots. This highlights the importance of spatial and temporal variability in microbiome assembly for optimizing plant-microbe interactions.
